Climate Change is our generation's single most urgent environmental
challenge. Without action from elected leaders and the public, the
consequences of climate change threaten every aspect of our way of life
in South Carolina.
While the consequences of climate change extend far beyond South
Carolina, our state has a critical role to play in solving the climate
crisis. South Carolina represents a unique combination of challenges
and opportunities in solving the climate crisis.
We remain the forth most energy inefficient states in the nation, but
we have some of the highest potential for cultivating new renewable
energy sources like biofuels and hydrogen. South Carolina is also
fighting a proposed new coal-fired power plant that would further
pollute the Pee Dee region, already dubbed by many as the “mercury
triangle.” However, South Carolina’s elected leaders at the federal
level are poised to play a significant role in future legislation that
would make dirty coal power obsolete.
Solving the climate crisis also requires greater attention to
developing sustainable communities and businesses. Sustainable
communities and businesses meet their present needs without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet those same
needs.
Conservation Voters Education Fund, in conjunction with the League of
Conservation Voters, is building grassroots and grasstops support for
meaningful action at the local and national level reduce our dependence
on dirty fuels and build a sustainable future for South Carolina.
